China Tang – the ultimate in Eastern promise?

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

China Tang has an enviable reputation as one of London’s most glamorous and celebrity-filled Chinese restaurants, and it isn’t at all hard to see why. When you enter the establishment, the atmosphere is equal parts 30s Shanghai exotic chic and up-to-the-minute metropolitan style, with some quirky touches thrown in to surprise and delight, such as the recordings of actors reading poetry in the loos. The fabulous bar is also well worth a visit, to sip on a sumptuously prepared Singapore Sling or Pineapple Julep and cast an eye over the beautiful people around the place.

Nonetheless, this experience is very much about the food, as it should be. A couple of dim sum make an ideal bite to start, perhaps with a glass of Louis Roederer, as such dishes as prawn cannelloni and roast pork buns act as the perfect hors d’oeuvre to a memorable dinner. Depending on how experimental you want to be, either choose from chef recommendations such as suckling pig platter and salt and pepper lobster claw, or go for more familiar favourites such as excellently cooked stir-fried beef in black pepper and the set-piece favourite of classic Peking duck. Whatever you order, it’s sure to be excellent.

It’s also well worth venturing through the extensive wine list, which offers a superb selection of both Old and New World wines, and the ever-obliging sommeliers are on hand to guide you through the perfect bottle to accompany your meal. If you want to go somewhere and be made to feel special, China Tang is ideal.

The perfect exhibition for our multicultural age?

Visitors to Paris during October may have been a little confused when they gazed at the iconic Eiffel Tower, the symbol of French pride, lit up in the colours of the Turkish flag. This episode is one of around 400 events which form part of an unusual cultural interface where France is celebrating all things Turkish over the next six months. A host of cultural, social and educational events are taking place across the country, in part to raise awareness about the multicultural nature of Turkey, and specifically Istanbul as it prepares to become ‘European Capital of Culture for 2010’.

One of the most impressive events is an exhibition celebrating 8,000 years of Istanbul’s history being held in the Grand Palais in Paris. The exhibition, ‘From Byzantium to Istanbul: one port for two continents features an impressive array of Turkish artefacts, and is especially exciting since many of these items have never left their own country before now. It tracks the development of the city from its Neolithic origins to the formation of Byzantium, Constantinople and finally modern Istanbul and intends to disprove current misconceptions about Turkey’s diverse history.

‘From Byzantium to Istanbul” at the Grand Palais in Paris runs until Jan. 25, 2010.

The luxury hotel chain Orient Express has launched a new spa which will specialize in traditional water based therapies at its Cambodian retreat La Residence d’Angkor. This new facility expands the already impressive repertoire of health experiences offered by the chain across Asia. The treatments have a strong focus on the healing and revitalizing power of water and visitors cannot fail to notice that the design of the resort also closely adheres to this theme. Specially designed suites located right next to the treatment areas have also just been opened to provide total seclusion, even from the rest of the resort if you wish.

If you need an excuse to visit and get seriously pampered then tie in a trip to the famous Angkor Wat temples located close to the resort where the hoards of other tourists are sure to raise your stress levels. Perfectly secluded yet moments away from this iconic Cambodian site, the Kong Kea Spa is the hot new place to kick back.

kouconceptstore_main

The brainchild of lifestyle guru and interior designer, Louise Kou, the Kou concept store heralds a new type of shopping experience in Hong Kong where tailor-made luxury is key. The store is designed as a chic mansion and does not feel like walking into a conventional store at all: the area is divided up into various rooms where appropriate items are showcased, including a bedroom, lounge and even an outside patio complete with marquee.

Everything from the paintings on the walls to the handbags sitting on the tables is for sale and the products are sourced to the highest possible standards.  A combination of Asian and European home ware and clothing, handpicked or designed by Kou herself, have all been selected to fit with her philosophy of achieving harmony through your lifestyle options.

A trip to the store can be complimented by a session at the lifestyle consultancy company which she also runs.  So strong is her vision that a visit to the Kou Concept store is not only a shopping trip to buy some home furnishings but should also prove to be a lifestyle- enriching experience.
