Ronnie Scott’s celebrates 50 years of jazz

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

ronniescotts_main

Ronnie Scott’s is the most famous jazz club in London, if not the world, and it’s celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Whenever I’ve been there, there are lots of things that never fail to impress – whether it’s the performances by some fabulous A-list acts in this most intimate of intimate spaces (recently Van Morrison and Jeff Beck) or the showstopping debut appearances by confident new acts who are destined for greatness. I still remember watching an incredibly charismatic young man who used his piano as a kind of percussion instrument; strange to think that a few short years later Jamie Cullum would end up an internationally renowned musician, and engaged to Sophie Dahl to boot.

An evening at Ronnie’s is always a pleasure, because it’s about more than just the music. There’s one of the best bars in Soho upstairs, serving fabulous cocktails and moreish bar snacks while often featuring some stunning live music. The food is always excellent too, whether you’re into simple but delicious sandwiches or more elaborate meals, such as fillet of bream or beef.

While it’s open to the public, it’s members of Ronnie Scott’s who get the best deal. For £165 a year, benefits include 2 free tickets to a show, free entrance to the bar and club (after certain times), the chance to pre-book space in the bar and even a bottle of champagne if you introduce a new member, and much else. It’s pretty hard to argue with any of that. See you there!

Seventy Thirty – the corporate Cupid

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

We all have our idea of Mr or Miss Right, but when we’re so stretched for time and happy in our comfort zones how are we going to make that dream a reality? The perfect relationship isn’t easy to find, nor is a exclusive service that can help you locate it if you’re pushed for time. What you need is a personalised matchmaking service that’s a cut above the rest. I popped along to Seventy Thirty, a partner headhunting service, to find out how Cupid turned corporate and brought love into the 21st century.

Seventy Thirty offers a bespoke service to suit the needs of the upmarket individual. They begin by conducting an interview to understand your core values and how they apply to the four main areas of your life: background, lifestyle, sexual attraction and relationship goals. When I was interviewed at their exclusive offices in Knightsbridge (although their trained psychologists can also visit a member’s home) I am told that as long as those core values are the same between two individuals there lies the potential for a successful, lasting relationship.

But the real genius of Seventy Thirty is that it is exclusively tailored to respond to the needs of successful, affluent people. In order to join you need to have assets of over £1 million, to reflect the calibre of their members. In return you get a team of trained psychologists and contacts scouring the highest echelons of society in search of your perfect partner. Seventy Thirty’s vast network of contacts across the dating scene work to introduce you to that special someone and then it’s over to you.

Rachel MacLynn, the Head of Membership, is keen to stress that Seventy Thirty only accept members who are seeking a meaningful relationships. “We’re keen to offer our members a real dating experience, that’s why we search for matches using our sophisticated networking system,” she explains. “Neither our members nor the partners we find them would visit you run-of-the-mill ‘dating agency’. This is an exclusive service and we pride ourselves upon finding the most attractive, single people in the country.”

Robert Redford kidded about the ‘million-dollar club’ at the end of Indecent Proposal, but don’t get the wrong idea; Seventy Thirty is a matchmaking service that wastes no time and offers its members the crème de la crème of the dating scene. So if your date does lead to a proposal you can tell now it will be more than decent.

Art Basel 2009: Parties and Avant-garde Art Invade Miami

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Known for its perpetually tan residents, sunny beaches and nightlife, Miami Beach turns into an art lovers’ dream in the first week of December. Since its inauguration in 2002, Art Basel Miami has put the Art Deco capital on the map as host of the most prestigious art fair in the United States.  250 top galleries from around the world, 2,000 art collectors and innumerable curators, dealers and private collectors of the highest caliber flock to sunny Miami Beach in honor of the fine arts. Art Basel week is known as the Mecca of Art for art aficionados as Miami Beach is now home to more than 10 satellite art fairs that take place simultaneously.

Along with the art types come the parties, celebrities and hopefuls trying to gain access into the hottest events of the season. Art Basel week 2008 proved all the naysayers wrong; the economy couldn’t put a damper on the mood, as a whirlwind of parties ensued with frenzied enthusiasm. Last year’s famous faces included Andre Balazs, who threw the famed paintball bash at the Raleigh, Marc Jacobs with Lorenzo Martone in tow, Calvin Klein at the Vanity Fair party at the MOCA and more. While Balazs may no longer be proprietor of the Raleigh, not much else has changed. Expect more famous faces and iconic parties this season.

Major players making the art scene rounds include the likes of Jerry Speyer and Larry Gagosian. My Art Basel advice is to dress to the nines (dress code: don’t expect to see bedazzled tees; those on the party circuit are draped in Rick Owens, Wang and Margiela) and plan in advance! Those coveted spots on the guest list are by invitation only and clipboard wielding PR folks regard them as iron clad.

A very happening Halloween

Halloween’s always busy, but this year it was insane. Requests came in weeks in advance and everyone wanted the hottest venues. The clubs were starting their parties from Thursday so it was actually Halloween weekend I was preparing for. I had an amazing time at The Box, Boom Boom Room, and RDV. The Box is the quintessential experience of eccentricity and debauchery all mixed into one big unforgettable experience. The show was amazing; definitely jaw dropping. I’ll leave the details to the imagination.

I went to Boom Boom Room last night which is fast becoming a fave of mine, as it’s bustling with celebrity types like Daphne Guinness, the stylist for all of David LaChappelle and Steven Klein’s photo shoots. She was definitely a show stopper with her disgustingly gorgeous Nina Ricci shoes on. And need I mention how hot Andre Balazs is. Boom is definitely my new Hot Spot. Tonight is a big night. The owner Redd Stylez of The Gates will be celebrating his Birthday tonight so that should be a wild one. I’ll make a cameo as he always takes care of us at Quintessentially. Then I’m off to Juliet, which is the newest nightlife venue opened in NYC. When I recover myself, I can reflect that there’s never a dull moment.

China Tang – the ultimate in Eastern promise?

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

China Tang has an enviable reputation as one of London’s most glamorous and celebrity-filled Chinese restaurants, and it isn’t at all hard to see why. When you enter the establishment, the atmosphere is equal parts 30s Shanghai exotic chic and up-to-the-minute metropolitan style, with some quirky touches thrown in to surprise and delight, such as the recordings of actors reading poetry in the loos. The fabulous bar is also well worth a visit, to sip on a sumptuously prepared Singapore Sling or Pineapple Julep and cast an eye over the beautiful people around the place.

Nonetheless, this experience is very much about the food, as it should be. A couple of dim sum make an ideal bite to start, perhaps with a glass of Louis Roederer, as such dishes as prawn cannelloni and roast pork buns act as the perfect hors d’oeuvre to a memorable dinner. Depending on how experimental you want to be, either choose from chef recommendations such as suckling pig platter and salt and pepper lobster claw, or go for more familiar favourites such as excellently cooked stir-fried beef in black pepper and the set-piece favourite of classic Peking duck. Whatever you order, it’s sure to be excellent.

It’s also well worth venturing through the extensive wine list, which offers a superb selection of both Old and New World wines, and the ever-obliging sommeliers are on hand to guide you through the perfect bottle to accompany your meal. If you want to go somewhere and be made to feel special, China Tang is ideal.

No Stranger to excellent cooking

L’Etranger, in Gloucester Road, might appear from its name and initial appearance to be the very model of a neighbourhood French restaurant. Closer inspection, however, reveals an altogether different beast. Under the guidance of Executive Chef Jerome Tauvron and Head Chef Kingshuk Dey, the cuisine here is a bold and successful mix of French and Japanese cuisine, a less alarming prospect than it might originally seem; after all, Joël Robuchon’s empire has been built on similar principles.

In addition to the excellent a la carte menu, which allows you to stick to French or Japanese cuisine exclusively if you so wish, there are a selection of tasting menus which allow a combination of the restaurant’s influences, including the ‘Degustation’, ‘Opulence’ and ‘Champagne et Poissons’, the latter of which boasts a bottle of Dom Perignon and such delicacies as caramelized black cod with miso, scallops and black pudding and tuna tartare with seruga caviar. The slightly more restrained Opulence menu offers excellent Wagyu beef fillet Rossini as well, as well as the amazing-tasting Tofu Yuzu ice cream. The sommelier will suggest a range of unusual and interesting wines (from the restaurant’s extensive cellar) to go with the food if so desired, including a sparkling sake to complement the tuna tartare. Service is, as you’d expect, impeccable, making this mildly experimental establishment a pleasure to visit.
