Five incredible micro-wedding venues

Although small, these locations pull out all the stops – from an ancient Italian vineyard to an eclectic French château.

It goes without saying that a micro-wedding is small. Roughly defined as an intimate celebration with around 20 guests, micro-weddings still include all the hallmarks of a traditional wedding but on a much smaller scale. And they’re growing in popularity.

‘Post-covid, we have noticed a shift where couples are spending the same amount on smaller groups,’ says Quintessentially Weddings’ Ellie Pearce-Thomas. ‘It enables you to spend time with those closest to you, as well as allowing greater freedom of choice over big-ticket items often compromised at larger scale weddings.’

But the main pull of a smaller guest list? Access to unique venues.

‘Micro weddings open a world of new and unique spaces and possibilities typically inaccessible to larger wedding celebrations, such as art galleries or restaurants,’ says Ellie. ‘Plus, with increased face time with loved ones and easier transportation costs, they offer more value by way of quality time and unique experiences with your guests.’

So, if you’re planning a smaller celebration, Ellie has selected her shortlist of luxury venues around the globe that are perfect for 20 guests or less.

Langdon Court Manor, UK

We anticipate that this 16th-century manor will be one of the UK’s most desired wedding venues when it opens in a few months. Each of its 14 bedrooms has been individually designed with an emphasis on creating a ‘home away from home’, and the entire property uses an elegant, neutral palette that’s a great backdrop for your own decorations. And, to make things even easier, the property is already licensed for UK civil ceremonies – one more thing to check off your ‘to-do before I do’ list.

Tip: ‘This is ideal for anyone looking for an exclusive-use property that is new and unknown on the wedding market’, says Ellie. ‘It really is a home away from home for your guests.’

Château de Brives, France

If saying ‘I do’ – or ‘oui, je le veux’ – in a French château sounds like your dream venue, cast your eyes over this Italian-influenced property just outside of Cognac. It was once the home of a noble family and still has a homely feel by way of rustic wooden tables, firepits, and eclectic antiques that you can also use as wedding props. It sleeps 18, has a coach house overlooking a pool, and those vows? You could say them beneath an oak tree or in a vintage wine cellar.

Tip: ‘We love that there is a church in the nearby village as those who want a Catholic ceremony abroad can still have one,’ says Ellie.

Maisa Victoria, Barcelona

This recently restored 15th-century manor has nailed the balance between modernity and heritage; ornate framed portraits and the original exposed wooden beams are still present, as are 14 air-conditioned bedrooms, a hot tub, and an infinity pool. Multiple terraces on several levels transform it into a multi-tiered pleasure palace of food, drink, and entertainment, and there are also two private patios connected by a vintage bodega.

Tip: ‘The beautiful terrace overlooking the infinity pool creates a breathtaking photo opportunity when the sun sets as the property’s clever lighting reflects off the water in the pool,’ says Ellie.

Follonico, Italy

Your wedding at Follonico begins with the wind whispering through the cypress trees. Twenty of your loved ones are gathered in the grounds of a Tuscan farmhouse, framed by rivers, olive trees, and ancient vineyards. Later, you dine around a wildflower-laden table in the open air, before the celebrations continue until the sky is filled with stars. There’s space for just 12 guests to stay the night and, with just 24 hosted in the grounds, this is a micro-wedding in the truest sense.

Tip: ‘For wine lovers, this venue is the perfect backdrop to welcome guests to celebrate such a special occasion,’ says Ellie. ‘And, being in Tuscany, there is the opportunity to create a full weekend itinerary with additional vineyard visits and wine tastings.’

Tintswalo, South Africa

Often hailed as one of the most romantic destinations in South Africa, Tintswalo pulls out all the sentimental stops. It’s a boutique lodge sitting at the base of Table Mountain National Park, where the ocean laps at your toes and magnificent sunsets are practically guaranteed. The venue is well-versed in micro-weddings; there’s space for between six and 20 guests, every suite has views over the ocean, and there’s a choice of five sun-kissed spots to say your vows.

Tip: ‘We love the multiple photo opportunities a venue of this calibre and uniqueness provides,’ says Ellie. ‘It is especially suited to those who enjoy being close to nature whilst in a luxury setting.’
